Over the next four years, tens of thousands of farmers across Latin America, Asia and Africa will reap the benefits of a renewed collaboration between Nestlé Nespresso and the Rainforest Alliance. Through a pact called “Ecolaboration,” many new farms will enter the Rainforest Alliance Certified™ program, enhancing their commitment to social and environmental sustainability. As a result, 80 percent of the beans used in the company’s espresso will come from certified farms by 2013.
Speaking about the joint effort, Rainforest Alliance president Tensie Whelan said: “After five years of working together through Nespresso’s AAA quality program, the Rainforest Alliance and our partners in the Sustainable Agriculture Network are pleased to join with Nespresso in taking this relationship to a higher level. The ‘Ecolaboration’ commitment means that we will work with as many as 80,000 farmers in nine countries.”
We at the Rainforest Alliance are really excited about the long-term, sustainable benefits of this joint project with Nespresso. It will really make a difference in the lives of farmers, workers and also improve the environment.
